About the Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach Area

When it comes to South Carolina beach vacations, Myrtle Beach typically comes to mind; however, the trendy kitsch and crowded shores may not be for everyone. For a more casual, carefree getaway, vacationers are discovering Pawleys Island, 25 miles farther south.

Litchfield Beach Area

Why Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach?

Generations of families and savvy travelers have made Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach their vacation destination for over 250 years and yet this Lowcountry coastal region has retained its charm and casual character.

Our coastal region encompasses a uniquely diverse ecosystem. We are bounded on the west by the lazy flow of the Waccamaw River with tributaries reaching inland to historic rice fields. To our south is the breathtaking Winyah Bay Estuary. Along our coastline are pristine saltmarshes threaded with winding tidal creeks thrumming with the activity of shorebirds and other wildlife.

Also bounding us on the east are miles of wide, soft sandy beaches stretching from the stone jetty on the north end of Huntington Beach State Park to the southern peninsula of Litchfield Beach and across to Pawleys Island. While the first order of business is unwinding on the beach with a little shelling, body surfing and sunbathing, our area offers plenty of other things to do.

What is there to do in Pawleys Island?

Test your skills at a variety of exciting outdoor activities, such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, crabbing and fishing. Bike ride under immense moss-draped oaks and along tidal waters. Hit the greens on one of the area’s many renowned golf courses. Visit the Pawleys Island Hammock Shops, home of the original rope hammock. Discover local art galleries and sample local cuisine unique to our area.

For a little extra adventure, explore Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. Brookgreen is a leading cultural and educational institution and National Historic Landmark, featuring a wildlife preserve, arboretum, sculpture gardens, rice field tours, and more. In addition to its long stretch of beach, Huntington is home to the historic Atalaya castle and offers some of the best shorebird viewing along the Grand Strand.

Explore the rich and diverse treasures of the Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach area or simply recline in a rope hammock near the beach. However you choose to spend your time, our South Carolina vacation destination will be unforgettable and carefree!
